SEO in 2024 was shaped by four Google core updates, new spam policies against scaled and borrowed-reputation content, a new Core Web Vital, the completion of mobile-first indexing and the arrival of AI Overviews in Google Search, including in India from August. The lesson for 2025 is not a new trick. It is that helpful, accurate, experience-led content on a fast, mobile-friendly site matters more than ever.

Here is a month-by-month look at what changed in 2024 and a practical list of SEO priorities for 2025.

What were the biggest SEO changes in 2024?

The biggest changes were Google’s tougher stance on low-value content, the move of helpfulness signals into core ranking, AI Overviews in search results and a stricter responsiveness metric.

What did Google’s 2024 core updates change?

Google ran four core updates in 2024 (March, August, November and December), with the March update the largest, aimed at reducing unhelpful, unoriginal content.

When Google announced the March 2024 core update, it said it expected to reduce low-quality, unoriginal content in results by about 40%, and that helpfulness would now be assessed across its core systems instead of a separate helpful content system. The March update finished on 19 April 2024, and Google later reported a 45% reduction in low-quality, unoriginal content in results. The August update began on 15 August 2024, and Google said it aimed to better surface useful content, including from smaller sites. The November and December updates followed in quick succession. We explained the March changes in detail in our post on the Google March 2024 core update.

How did spam policies change in 2024?

Google added three new spam policies, against scaled content abuse, site reputation abuse and expired domain abuse, and later tightened the wording of site reputation abuse.

  • Scaled content abuse: mass-producing pages mainly to rank, however the content is made.
  • Site reputation abuse: third-party content placed on a trusted site mainly to exploit its ranking signals. Enforcement began in May 2024, and in November 2024 Google clarified that first-party involvement or oversight does not make such content acceptable.
  • Expired domain abuse: using an old domain’s reputation to rank low-value content.

Google also ran spam updates in March, June and December 2024.

How did AI Overviews affect search in 2024?

AI Overviews brought AI-generated summaries with source links to the top of many Google results, first in the US in May 2024 and in India from August 2024.

AI Overviews show a summary for some queries, with links to the web pages used. In India, Google launched them in English and Hindi in August 2024. Google’s guidance has been that the same SEO best practices apply: helpful, reliable content and a crawlable, indexable site. Beyond Google, OpenAI launched ChatGPT search on 31 October 2024 for paid users and extended it to all logged-in users in December 2024, so people now have more places to look for answers.

What changed in technical SEO in 2024?

INP became a Core Web Vital, mobile-first indexing was completed, and Google retired some long-standing tools and features.

  • INP: pages now need to respond to taps and clicks within 200 milliseconds to be rated good. See our INP guide.
  • Mobile-first indexing: from 5 July 2024 Google crawls all sites with its smartphone crawler, so what is missing on mobile is effectively missing. Our mobile SEO checklist covers what to check.
  • Cache links: Google removed cached page links from results in early 2024.
  • Search Console: new features included a 24-hour view in the Performance report, with more recent data.

What should your SEO priorities be for 2025?

Focus on genuinely helpful content, a technically sound mobile site, a strong local and brand presence and measurement tied to business results.

  1. Audit your content. Improve, merge or remove thin or repetitive pages, especially near-duplicate location or service pages.
  2. Show real experience. Add bylines, first-hand detail, original photos and accurate sources. Our E-E-A-T guide explains how.
  3. Answer questions clearly. Start sections with direct answers and use clear headings, lists and tables, which help readers and any search format.
  4. Fix mobile performance. Check Core Web Vitals, especially INP and LCP, on real phones.
  5. Strengthen local presence. Keep your Google Business Profile and listings accurate, and respond to reviews.
  6. Keep third-party content under control. Avoid hosting sponsored sections you do not manage.
  7. Measure what matters. Track enquiries and sales from search in GA4 and Search Console, not just traffic.
  8. Watch your brand in AI answers. Search for your business and services in Google and AI tools, and correct inaccurate information at its source.

SEO 2024 Review FAQs

Google released four core updates in 2024: March, August, November and December. The March 2024 core update was the largest and most complex, taking several weeks to complete. Google also released separate spam updates in March, June and December 2024.

Yes. AI Overviews include links to the web pages they draw on, and many searches still show regular results, local packs and shopping listings. Google has said the same SEO best practices apply. Helpful, trustworthy pages that are crawlable and indexable are what search features, AI or not, rely on.

For most businesses, the most important change is Google’s stronger focus on helpful, original content. The March 2024 update brought helpfulness signals into core ranking, and new spam policies target mass-produced pages and borrowed reputations. Sites that publish thin content at scale face the most risk.

Google has said it focuses on content quality, not how it is produced, but that using automation mainly to manipulate rankings breaks its spam policies. If you use AI tools, have an expert review, fact-check and add real experience before publishing, and do not mass-produce low-value pages.

Yes. Core Web Vitals, now LCP, INP and CLS, are part of the page experience signals Google considers. Google has also said good page experience does not override helpful content. Treat them as a user experience priority: faster, more responsive pages help visitors and enquiries.

You do not need a separate strategy yet. The basics that work for Google, such as accurate, well-structured content, a clear brand presence and consistent business information, also help other answer tools understand your business. Check how your brand appears in these tools occasionally and fix inaccuracies at the source.
