What is answer engine optimization? Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content so that search engines and AI tools can pull a clear, direct answer from it and show it to the person asking. It targets places like featured snippets, “People also ask” boxes, AI Overviews and voice assistants, where the answer appears before anyone clicks.
This guide explains how AEO works, what Google’s own documentation says about featured snippets and structured data, and a simple process you can follow on your own pages.
What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?
AEO is about making your page the easiest and most trustworthy source for a specific question, so that an “answer engine” chooses your text to answer it.
An answer engine is any system that replies with an answer rather than only a list of links. In Google Search, that includes featured snippets, the “People also ask” group and AI Overviews. Voice assistants and AI chat tools work in a similar way, reading a question and returning one short response.
People sometimes call this AEO SEO, because it sits inside normal search optimisation. You still need pages that are crawlable, indexed and helpful. AEO adds a sharper focus on questions, direct answers and clean page structure.
If you would like specialists to plan this for your site, our AEO services start by mapping the questions your customers ask.
How is AEO different from SEO and GEO?
SEO aims to rank pages, AEO aims to supply the direct answer to a question, and GEO aims to be cited in AI-written responses.
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main target | Ranked results | Featured snippets, “People also ask”, voice answers | AI Overviews, AI Mode, AI assistants |
| Content focus | Topics and search intent | Specific questions and short answers | Clear facts, sources and brand information |
| Typical format | Full pages and guides | Question headings with direct answers, lists and tables | Well-sourced, specific explanations |
The three overlap heavily. A page with question-led headings and direct answers often helps all three. For the AI-citation side, read our guide on what generative engine optimization is.
How does Google choose featured snippets?
Google’s systems decide automatically whether a page would make a good featured snippet for a query, and you cannot mark a page as one.
Google’s featured snippets documentation describes them as results where the descriptive snippet appears before the link, rather than after it. Featured snippets can also appear inside the “People also ask” group. When someone clicks a featured snippet, Google can take them straight to the matching section of the page, with no extra markup needed from the site.
Because there is no tag to request a featured snippet, the only route is to publish the clearest, most relevant answer on a page that Google already indexes.
Can you stop a featured snippet?
Yes. Google lists three controls:
nosnippetremoves all snippets for the page, including featured snippets.data-nosnippetkeeps a marked section of text out of snippets.max-snippetlimits snippet length. Google says a lower value makes featured snippets less likely but does not guarantee it.
How do you write content for answer engines?
Write each section as a question with a one- or two-sentence answer right below it, then add detail, examples and steps.
- Collect real questions. Use your sales calls, WhatsApp chats, emails and the “People also ask” box for your main topics.
- Use the question as a heading. Phrase it the way a customer would, such as “How long does a website redesign take?”
- Answer first. Put a direct, complete answer in the first sentence. Avoid starting with background.
- Add the right format. Use numbered steps for processes, bullet lists for options and tables for comparisons.
- Keep it accurate. Give facts you can stand behind and link to official sources where you quote rules or limits.
- Update when things change. An outdated answer is less useful to readers and less likely to be chosen.
Good answer content takes planning and steady publishing. Our content marketing services can help you build a library of question-led articles around your services.
Does structured data help with AEO?
Structured data helps Google understand your page, but valid markup does not guarantee any rich result or answer feature.
Google’s general structured data guidelines recommend JSON-LD and ask that markup describes content that is visible on the page. Google says not to mark up content that is hidden from readers, and warns that breaking the guidelines can lead to a manual action that removes rich result eligibility.
What changed for FAQ rich results?
In August 2023, Google announced that FAQ rich results would only be shown for well-known, authoritative government and health websites. For most business sites, adding FAQPage markup will no longer produce the expandable FAQ result in Search.
That does not make FAQ sections useless. A well-written FAQ still answers real questions on the page, and that visible text can still be considered for snippets and other answers. Just do not expect the markup itself to change how your listing looks.
How do AI Overviews fit into AEO?
AI Overviews are another kind of answer, and Google says the same SEO basics apply, with no extra requirements to appear in them.
In its “AI features and your website” guidance, Google explains that a page needs to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. The same snippet controls, such as nosnippet and max-snippet, also apply to these features.
So the work you do for featured snippets, clear answers and accurate facts, also prepares your pages for AI-generated answers.
How do you measure AEO?
Track the questions you target, check who holds the answer for each one, and watch clicks and impressions for those pages in Search Console.
| What to check | Where |
|---|---|
| Clicks and impressions for question queries | Search Console Performance report, filtered by query |
| Whether your page holds the featured snippet | Manual search for each target question |
| Whether your page is indexed | URL Inspection in Search Console |
| Enquiries from answer pages | Your analytics key events, such as form submits |
Review the list each month. Answers can change hands, so a regular check tells you which pages need updating.
Answer Engine Optimization FAQs
Is AEO the same as voice search optimisation?
They overlap but are not identical. Voice search optimisation focuses on spoken questions, which are often longer and more conversational. AEO covers any system that returns a direct answer, including featured snippets, “People also ask” and AI Overviews. Question-led headings with short, clear answers help in both cases, so the same content work supports each one.
Can I pay or use a tag to get a featured snippet?
No. Google says its systems decide whether a page would make a good featured snippet, and there is no markup to request one. The practical approach is to publish a clear, accurate answer to a specific question on a page Google already indexes, and to keep improving it if another page holds the snippet.
Should I still add FAQ schema to my pages?
Since August 2023, Google shows FAQ rich results only for well-known, authoritative government and health websites. For most businesses, the markup will not change how a result looks. You can keep an FAQ section for readers, since the visible questions and answers are still useful content on the page.
How long should an answer be?
Google does not publish an ideal length. A good pattern is a direct one- or two-sentence answer first, followed by detail, steps or examples. That gives a short answer for people who want it quickly, and depth for those who want to understand more before they decide.
Does AEO reduce my website clicks?
It can change how people reach you. Some searchers get what they need from the answer itself, while others click through for detail, steps or to contact you. Write answers that solve the question but also show what more your page offers, such as a checklist, comparison or next step.
