Local citations are online mentions of your business name, address and phone number (often called NAP) on websites such as directories, maps, social profiles and industry listings. Consistent citations help customers find the right details and help search engines confirm that your business is real and where it is located.

This guide explains what counts as a citation, why NAP consistency matters, which listings are worth having for an Indian business, and how to audit and fix the inconsistencies that build up over the years.

What are local citations?

A local citation is any place online that lists your business details, especially your name, address and phone number, with or without a link to your website.

  • Structured citations: business listings with fixed fields, such as Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Justdial, Sulekha and IndiaMART.
  • Unstructured citations: mentions inside articles, news stories, event pages or blog posts.
  • Social profiles: your Facebook Page, Instagram business profile and LinkedIn company page.
  • Industry and local listings: trade associations, chambers of commerce and niche portals for your sector.

What does NAP consistency mean?

NAP consistency means your business name, address and phone number appear the same way everywhere they are listed.

Small differences add up. A business listed as “Sharma Electricals” in one place, “Sharma Electrical Works Pvt Ltd” in another, with an old phone number and two versions of the address, looks like three different businesses. Customers may call the wrong number, and search engines get mixed signals about which details are correct.

Why do citations matter for local SEO?

Citations help customers find accurate details and give search engines more evidence about your business, its location and its reputation.

Google’s help page on improving local ranking says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Prominence includes information Google has about a business from across the web, such as links, articles and directories. Accurate citations on trusted sites are part of that picture, alongside reviews and your own website.

The biggest benefit is often practical. Many customers in India find businesses through Justdial, IndiaMART, maps apps and social media as well as Google. If those listings are wrong, you lose the call.

Which listings should an Indian business have?

Start with the main map and search platforms, then add the directories and industry sites your customers actually use.

  1. Google Business Profile: the most important listing for local searches on Google Search and Maps.
  2. Bing Places for Business: covers Bing search and maps.
  3. Apple Business Connect: controls how your business appears in Apple Maps for iPhone users.
  4. Social profiles: Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn, with the same name, address and phone.
  5. Indian directories: Justdial, Sulekha and IndiaMART (especially for B2B suppliers and manufacturers).
  6. Industry portals: sector-specific sites, such as healthcare, property, education or travel portals.
  7. Local bodies: trade associations, market associations and chambers of commerce you belong to.

Quality matters more than quantity. A handful of accurate listings on sites people use is worth more than hundreds of low-quality directory submissions.

What happened to Google Business Profile websites?

Google turned off the simple websites created through Google Business Profile in March 2024, so businesses that relied on them need a proper website link on their profile.

Google announced that websites made with Business Profiles (usually on a business.site address) would be shut down in March 2024, with visitors redirected to the Business Profile until 10 June 2024. After that, the old links stop working. If any of your citations point to a business.site address, update them to your own website, and add your own website URL to your Business Profile.

How do you audit and fix your citations?

List every place your business appears, compare the details with your official NAP, then correct or claim each listing.

  1. Write down your official NAP. Decide the exact name, address format, phone number and website URL you will use everywhere.
  2. Search for yourself. Search your business name, old names, old phone numbers and old addresses on Google to find listings you forgot about.
  3. Record what you find. Use a spreadsheet with columns for the site, URL, current details, login status and what needs fixing.
  4. Claim and update. Log in or claim each listing and correct the details. Some sites need verification by phone or email.
  5. Handle duplicates. Where a site has two listings for your business, ask the platform to merge or remove the duplicate using its own process.
  6. Keep a master list. When you move or change numbers, update every listing on the list the same week.

What mistakes should you avoid with citations?

Avoid fake addresses, keyword-stuffed business names and bulk submissions to low-quality directories.

  • Do not add keywords or locations to your business name unless they are part of your real name. Google’s Business Profile guidelines prohibit this.
  • Do not use virtual offices or addresses where you do not serve customers, which Google’s guidelines also do not allow.
  • Do not pay for mass directory submissions on spammy sites.
  • Do not forget social profiles and old email signatures when you change details.

Local Citations FAQs

Yes, though they are one part of local SEO, not the whole of it. Google’s local ranking guidance mentions information from across the web as part of prominence. Accurate listings also help customers find your correct phone number and address on the platforms they already use, which directly affects calls and visits.

No. A citation is a mention of your business details, and it can still be useful without a link. Linked citations also send visitors to your site. Where a listing offers a website field, add your exact live URL so people can find more information.

There is no magic number. Focus on the main platforms (Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and social profiles), the top Indian directories for your sector and genuine local or industry listings. Accuracy across these matters more than adding many low-quality directories.

Update your Google Business Profile first, then your website, then every citation on your master list. Search for your old address to find listings you missed. Changing details on all platforms within a short period helps customers and search engines pick up the new location faster.

If customers do not visit you, Google’s guidelines let service-area businesses hide their address and show the areas they serve instead. Use the same approach on other platforms where possible. Never invent a shop address or use a virtual office just to appear in a particular area.

For many Indian businesses, Justdial is a useful listing because customers use it directly to find and call businesses. An accurate Justdial profile is a citation and a lead source. As with other directories, keep your name, address and phone the same as on your Google Business Profile.
