Google Merchant Center is the free tool where online stores upload their product information so it can appear across Google, including free product listings on the Shopping tab and paid Shopping ads through Google Ads. For Indian stores, setting it up properly means a verified website, accurate shipping and return details, and a clean product feed that matches what customers see on your site.
This Google Merchant Center setup guide walks through each step, adding products, fixing common disapprovals and connecting Google Ads.
What is Google Merchant Center?
Merchant Center is Google’s platform for managing how your products and store information appear on Google surfaces.
Once your products are approved, they can be eligible to show in free listings on Google, such as the Shopping tab, and, if you link Google Ads, in Shopping ads and Performance Max campaigns. Google’s help centre lists India among the countries where products can appear in free listings. Merchant Center does not sell products for you; it sends shoppers to your website to buy.
Google has been moving merchants to a simplified, redesigned version of Merchant Center (often called Merchant Center Next). Menu names may differ slightly depending on which version your account uses, but the steps below are the same in principle.
What do you need before you start?
You need a working online store with clear product, price, shipping, return and contact information, and a Google account for your business.
- A live website on your own domain with HTTPS checkout.
- Product pages showing the price in INR, availability, and a way to buy.
- Contact details: phone, email and address that customers can see.
- Published return and refund policy and shipping information.
- Good product images without watermarks or promotional text overlays.
Google’s Shopping ads policies and free listings requirements expect accurate information and a trustworthy shopping experience. Missing contact details or policies are a common reason for account problems.
Google Merchant Center setup: how do you create the account?
Create the account, add your business information, verify and claim your website, then set up shipping and returns.
- Sign up: go to Merchant Center and sign in with your business Google account.
- Business information: enter your business name, country (India), address and customer service contact.
- Verify and claim your website: confirm ownership using Google Search Console, a meta tag, an HTML file or Google Tag Manager. If your site is on Shopify or WooCommerce, their Google integrations can help.
- Shipping: add delivery costs and times for the areas you ship to. These must match your website.
- Returns: add your return policy, including return window and any costs.
- Tax and currency: list prices in INR, including applicable taxes, as shown on your site.
How do you add products to Merchant Center?
Add products automatically from your website, through a store integration, or with a product feed such as a Google Sheet or file.
| Method | Best for |
|---|---|
| Store integration (e.g. Shopify, WooCommerce) | Stores on platforms with official Google apps or plugins that sync products |
| Automatic from website | Sites with good product structured data that Google can crawl |
| Google Sheets | Small catalogues managed manually |
| Scheduled file or API | Larger catalogues and custom platforms |
Product data that matters most
- Title: clear and specific, with brand, product type and key attributes (size, colour, material).
- Description: accurate details shoppers need, not promotional slogans.
- Price and availability: must match the product page exactly.
- Images: clear photos of the product on a plain background for the main image.
- Identifiers: GTIN, brand and MPN where they exist.
- Product category and type: help Google understand where the product fits.
If you run WooCommerce, our WooCommerce setup checklist covers the store details Merchant Center depends on.
How do you fix common product disapprovals?
Check the diagnostics or “Needs attention” section in Merchant Center, fix the data or website issue named, and wait for products to be reviewed again.
- Price mismatch: the feed price differs from the page price. Sync data more often or fix caching on product pages.
- Availability mismatch: the product shows “in stock” in the feed but “out of stock” on the site.
- Missing identifiers: add GTINs for branded products that have them.
- Image problems: remove watermarks, borders and promotional text from images.
- Misrepresentation: add missing contact details, return and refund policy, and accurate business information. Remove unrealistic claims.
- Landing page not working: make sure product URLs load on mobile and are not blocked by robots.txt.
How do you connect Merchant Center to Google Ads?
Link your Merchant Center account to Google Ads so your products can be used in Shopping ads and Performance Max campaigns.
- In Merchant Center, open the linked accounts or apps and services section and send a link request to your Google Ads account.
- Approve the request in Google Ads.
- Set up conversion tracking so you can see which products sell from ads.
- Create a Shopping or Performance Max campaign using your product feed, with a daily budget you are comfortable with.
- Review search terms, products and returns regularly and adjust.

Google Merchant Center FAQs
Is Google Merchant Center free?
Yes. Creating a Merchant Center account and showing approved products in free listings costs nothing. You pay only if you run ads, such as Shopping ads or Performance Max campaigns, through Google Ads, where you control the budget.
Can Indian stores show products for free on Google?
Yes. Google’s help centre lists India among the countries where approved products can appear in free listings on Google, such as the Shopping tab. Your products must meet Google’s policies, and showing is not guaranteed, because it depends on your product data and what shoppers search for.
Why are my products not showing on Google Shopping?
Common reasons include products not yet approved, policy disapprovals, an unclaimed website, missing shipping or return settings, or free listings not enabled. Check the diagnostics or “Needs attention” area in Merchant Center, fix the issues listed and allow time for review.
What is a GTIN and do I need one?
A GTIN is a global product identifier, such as the barcode number on branded products. Google asks for GTINs for products that have them, because they help match your products to searches. Handmade, custom or private-label products without assigned GTINs can usually be submitted without one.
How often should I update my product feed?
Update it whenever prices, stock or product details change, so the feed always matches your website. Store integrations often sync automatically. If you use a file or spreadsheet, schedule regular updates, at least daily for stores where prices or stock change often.
What causes a Merchant Center misrepresentation suspension?
Misrepresentation issues usually come from missing or unclear business information, such as contact details, return policies or payment information, or from claims that look misleading. Review Google’s misrepresentation policy, make your website transparent and accurate, then request a review from Merchant Center.
