Google AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries at the top of some search results, with links to the web pages that support them. For AI Overviews SEO, Google says there are no special requirements: a page that is indexed and eligible to show a snippet can be used as a supporting link, so the same SEO basics still decide whether you appear.
What changes is how people click. This guide covers how AI Overviews and AI Mode work, what Google has said about traffic, how to read your own data and which controls you have over your content.
What are Google AI Overviews and AI Mode?
AI Overviews are short AI summaries shown within normal search results, while AI Mode is a separate, conversational search experience for longer and more complex questions.
Google’s “AI features and your website” guidance describes AI Overviews as a quick way to understand a topic, with links to explore further. AI Mode is designed for deeper questions that need reasoning, comparison or follow-up questions. Both show links to web pages alongside the AI response.
In India, Google started rolling out AI Overviews in English and Hindi in August 2024. AI Mode arrived in India in June 2025 as an English experiment in Search Labs.
Google also explains that both features may use a “query fan-out” technique. This means running several related searches across subtopics to find supporting pages, so your page can appear for a question it does not target word for word.
How does a page get shown in AI Overviews?
To be shown as a supporting link, Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet, and there are no extra technical requirements.
That puts the focus back on fundamentals that Google lists in its guidance:
- Let Googlebot crawl your important pages and make sure they are indexed.
- Make important content available in text, and link to it from other pages on your site.
- Give visitors a good page experience on mobile and desktop.
- Keep structured data consistent with what visitors can see on the page.
- Support text with good images and video where they help.
- Keep your Google Business Profile and Merchant Center information up to date if you use them.
To see where your brand already appears in AI answers, and where competitors are cited instead, an AI visibility audit is a good starting point.
Do AI Overviews reduce website traffic?
It depends on the site and the query; Google says overall clicks are stable, while also acknowledging that some sites receive less traffic and others more.
These are Google’s own statements, so read them as Google’s position rather than independent measurement:
- In its “AI features and your website” page, Google says clicks from search results pages with AI Overviews are higher quality, meaning users are more likely to spend more time on the site.
- In an August 2025 post on The Keyword, Liz Reid, Head of Google Search, wrote that total organic click volume from Google Search to websites has been “relatively stable year-over-year”. The same post says Google is sending “slightly more quality clicks to websites than a year ago”.
- The post also acknowledges “decreased traffic to some sites and increased traffic to others”, and says people increasingly click on forums, videos, podcasts and posts with first-hand perspectives.
The practical takeaway is that your own data matters more than any general claim. Short factual queries, such as definitions, may send fewer clicks if the summary answers them. Queries where people need to compare, buy, book or contact someone still require a visit.
How do you see AI Overviews traffic in Search Console?
Google says traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is counted in Search Console’s Performance report, under the “Web” search type, together with other search traffic.
That means you will not see a separate line for AI features in that report. Instead, look for patterns:
| Pattern in Search Console | What it may mean | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Impressions up, clicks flat | Your page is shown more often but fewer searchers click | Which queries changed, and whether they are short informational ones |
| Clicks down on “what is” pages | Searchers may get the definition from the results page | Whether those pages lead to enquiries at all |
| Clicks steady on service pages | Commercial queries still need a visit | Enquiry and call rates from those pages |
Pair this with Google Analytics. Google suggests tracking conversions and engagement rather than clicks alone, so mark enquiry forms, calls and WhatsApp clicks as key events and compare them over time.
Can you control how your content appears in AI features?
Yes, Google says the same snippet controls used for normal search results also apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode.
| Control | Effect |
|---|---|
nosnippet | No text snippet for the page, in normal results or AI features |
data-nosnippet | Keeps a marked part of the page out of snippets |
max-snippet | Limits how much text can be used as a snippet |
noindex | Keeps the page out of Google Search entirely |
Think carefully before using these. They also reduce or remove your normal snippets, which can cost you clicks from regular results.
What about Google-Extended?
Google-Extended is a separate robots.txt token that controls whether your content may be used to train future Gemini models and for grounding in some other Google products. Google states that it does not affect a site’s inclusion in Google Search and is not used as a ranking signal, so it is not a way to opt out of AI Overviews.
How should you approach AI Overviews SEO?
Keep doing the SEO basics well, and shift your effort towards content that earns a visit, not only an answer.
- Answer clearly. Use question headings with direct answers, as covered in our guide on answer engine optimisation. Clear answers are easier for any system to use correctly.
- Add what a summary cannot. Share your own process, local details, comparisons, checklists, photos and real examples from your work.
- Strengthen service pages. Make your services, areas covered, process and contact options easy to find.
- Keep facts consistent. Your website, Google Business Profile and listings should give the same name, address, phone and services.
- Track enquiries, not only traffic. A drop in clicks to a definition page matters less than a drop in leads.

Google AI Overviews FAQs
Can I pay to appear in AI Overviews?
No, not as an organic source. Google says pages are selected from its index, and a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet to appear as a supporting link. The way to improve your chances is the same as for normal search: crawlable, helpful pages that answer the question clearly and accurately.
Do I need special schema or code for AI Overviews?
No. Google says there are no additional requirements and no special optimisation needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Structured data is still useful when it matches what visitors can see on the page. The most important factors remain crawlable, indexed pages with helpful, clear content.
Why did my impressions go up while clicks fell?
Search Console counts AI feature traffic within the “Web” search type, so changes in how results look can shift impressions and clicks. If your page appears more often but searchers get a quick answer on the results page, clicks may not rise with impressions. Check which queries changed before deciding what to fix.
Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Overviews?
No. Google states that Google-Extended does not affect a site’s inclusion in Google Search and is not a ranking signal. To limit how your content appears in AI Overviews, Google points to snippet controls such as nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet, or noindex, which also affect normal results.
Is AI Mode available in India?
Yes. Google announced AI Mode for India in June 2025, starting as an experiment in Search Labs in English. Like AI Overviews, it shows links to web pages alongside its responses, and Google’s guidance says the same SEO best practices apply to both features.
